What Categories, Characteristics and Material Advantages Does 304 Stainless Steel Round Bar Have?
1. Basic Overview of 304 Stainless Steel Round Bars
Stainless steel round bars are solid long steel materials with a perfect circular cross-section. The industry uniformly adopts the millimeter value of steel diameter as the specification standard. For example, a round bar marked "50" means its diameter is 50 millimeters. There are abundant material types of stainless steel round bars on the market, and the mainstream common models include 201, 202, 301, 304, 303, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 2520 and others.
According to production processes, stainless steel round bars are divided into three categories: hot rolled, forged and cold drawn, with different specification ranges and application scenarios for each process. Among them, hot rolled stainless steel round bars cover specifications from 5.5mm to 250mm and are the most widely used products in the current market. With excellent comprehensive properties, stainless steel round bars are applied in many fields such as hardware kitchenware, architectural decoration, mechanical manufacturing, petrochemical industry, shipbuilding, electric power energy, aerospace, pharmaceutical and food industry. They are also suitable for various industrial production scenarios including seawater treatment equipment, chemical production, papermaking and printing and dyeing, fertilizer manufacturing, coastal engineering facilities and fastener processing.
2. Classification and Core Characteristics of 304 Stainless Steel Round Bars
In terms of production technology, stainless steel round bars are classified into hot rolled, forged and cold drawn types. Small hot rolled round bars with a specification of 5.5-25mm are mostly supplied in bundled straight strips, mainly used as construction steel bars, equipment bolts and general mechanical parts. Large-size hot rolled round bars with a diameter greater than 25mm are mostly used for manufacturing large mechanical components and processing seamless steel pipe blanks.
In terms of materials, the mainstream stainless steel round bar models and their exclusive characteristics are as follows:
(1) 310S Stainless Steel Round Bar: It is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel with high content of chromium and nickel elements. It has excellent oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance, outstanding high-temperature creep strength, stable long-term operation under high-temperature working conditions and superior high-temperature resistance.
(2) 316L Stainless Steel Round Bar: The cold-rolled finished product has high surface gloss and good appearance texture. The addition of molybdenum element in the material greatly improves the corrosion resistance, especially pitting corrosion resistance. It also has excellent high-temperature strength and work hardening performance, showing weak magnetism after processing and no magnetism under solution treatment state.
(3) 316 Stainless Steel Round Bar: It is the most widely used steel grade after 304 stainless steel. With the addition of molybdenum element, its corrosion resistance, atmospheric corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength are significantly improved, adapting to various harsh working conditions. It has excellent work hardening performance and no magnetism, and is widely used in high-end fields such as food processing and medical surgical instruments.
(4) 321 Stainless Steel Round Bar: Titanium element is added to the 304 stainless steel substrate to effectively inhibit intergranular corrosion, suitable for medium and high-temperature working environments of 430℃-900℃. Except for the greatly optimized weld corrosion resistance, its other mechanical and anti-corrosion properties are basically consistent with 304 stainless steel.
(5) 304L Stainless Steel Round Bar: It is a low-carbon modified version of 304 stainless steel, specially designed for welding working conditions. The extremely low carbon content can minimize the precipitation of carbides in the weld heat-affected zone, effectively avoiding intergranular corrosion of stainless steel after welding, and adapting to various high-precision welding processing scenarios.
(6) 304 Stainless Steel Round Bar: It is the most commonly used chromium-nickel stainless steel in all walks of life at present, with balanced comprehensive properties, including good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, low-temperature toughness and mechanical processing properties. It can resist rust and corrosion stably in conventional atmospheric environments. If in harsh environments with industrial pollution and heavy pollution, the surface needs regular cleaning to maintain its anti-corrosion performance and extend service life.
3. Core Chemical Composition of 304 Stainless Steel Round Bar (Mass Ratio %)
Carbon (C) ≤0.03, Silicon (Si) ≤1.00, Manganese (Mn) ≤2.00, Phosphorus (P) ≤0.035, Sulfur (S) ≤0.03, Nickel (Ni): 12.0-15.0, Chromium (Cr): 16.0-18.0, Molybdenum (Mo): 2.0-3.0
4. Corrosion Causes and Surface Oxidation Treatment Processes
Dust and solid particles attached to the stainless steel surface are important incentives for corrosion. Dust particles deposited on the surface of round bars will form tiny gaps, which are easy to retain chloride ion-containing water films, block the supplement of oxygen in the air, and damage the integrity of the passivation film on the stainless steel surface. At the same time, the dissolved area where dust accumulates and the surrounding complete passivation area will form an occluded cell effect, which further accelerates the formation and expansion of pitting corrosion pits and causes local corrosion damage to the steel.
Aiming at the problem of surface oxide scale on stainless steel, there are two mainstream industrial treatment processes:
(1) Sandblasting and shot blasting process: Micro glass bead sandblasting technology is adopted to accurately remove the black oxide scale on the steel surface without damaging the base material, suitable for various conventional steel components.
(2) Chemical cleaning process: Environmentally friendly acid-free passivation paste and normal-temperature non-toxic cleaning solution with inorganic additives are used for soaking treatment, which can effectively remove the surface oxide layer and restore the true color of stainless steel. The treated surface presents a uniform matte texture, especially suitable for large-scale and complex-structured stainless steel components.
